The problem can't be to do with graphics drivers as my laptop has an
intel card with open source drivers, and the desktop has a nvida card
with proprietary drivers. Both have coloured-in fontwork letters in
libreoffice if 'Hardware Acceleration' is enabled. Shadows of fontwork
also appear distorted

Fontwork 'Coloured in' on
Note: this only happens if 'hardware acceleration' is enabled in the
options. However, with out this fontwork is fuzzy with jagged edges.
