When I type gio open /full/path/to/file.pdf in terminal, then the PDF
is opened properly with evice. But firefox still launches GIMP for PDF
files.

After upgrading to 13.04 I had to remove the fgrlx driver and started using the
xorg radeon driver, because the new fgrlx driver was showing "Not supported
hardware" warning on the screen.
With 12.10 and fgrlx I could play Steam Trine 2 , with 13.04 and xorg radeon
driver
That was because I was using fglrx which doesn't support my Radeon HD
4650. After I removed fglrx and started using the xorg radeon driver
the problem has gone.
