I had the same issue, and I got the following when inserting a usb drive
or external HD formatted with NTFS

The attachment "1-23.2.1-1ubuntu4.debdiff" seems to be a debdiff. The
ubuntu-sponsors team has been subscribed to the bug report so that they
can review and hopefully sponsor the debdiff. If the attachment isn't a
patch, please remove the "patch" flag from the attachment, remove the
"patch" tag,
Try breaking into the gnome-shell process in gdb and calling
'gjs_dumpstack'. That's assuming it doesn't already reveal where it's
hung when you attach.
