I guess I know why upstream cairo never made it into Firefox: Mozilla's
version of cairo is more like a fork than a version of cairo with a few
patches applied.
Not only that: Some of the patches are documented in .patch files and a
README. And some are not documented at all with just the change i
EdiD, to advise, xorg is used on Launchpad as a starting point for all
things Xserver related (core, graphics, input, etc.).
Despite this, did this issue not occur for you personally in a Ubuntu
release prior to 16.04?

The USB optical mouse doesn't work both, when connected after boot or
before boot.
I am currently using the following commands after which it is working
fine:
sudo rmmod usbhid
sudo modprobe usbhid
I am running these commands every time after reconnecting the mouse, or ever
This is problem also in other applications. For example - totem,
evince...
- I can reproduce this bug in ubuntu 16.04
- I can reproduce this bug with upstream 3.18.x applications that are launched
with jhbuild run
- I can not reproduce this bug with upstream 3.20.x applications that are
launched

Thomas, probably it is possible to build FF and TB with the system's
libcairo. I do not know why the maintainers of these packages stick to
stone-old libraries which have many bugs which are already fixed in the
current version.
But I will not do this fix as I am not the maintainer of FF and TB. T
