I've enabled XDMCP in GDM, and created an xinetd service for VNC via
XDMCP.
Any time I try to connect via VNC, gdm crashes, taking down the local display
as well.
After that, gdm won't start again until I kill the "orphaned" local display.

I have the same problem. To make the window get focused just press the
bar. The checkbox will be enabled and you will have control of the
window again. You can disable the checkbox and continue.

Thanks Timo, but no useful change. The pointer moves to a different
place near the bottom of the screen and can't be moved with the mouse,
whereas I could move the pointer vertically with evdev.
Does that mean the problem is elsewhere than the evdev package?

Where is the fix? To roll back to Kernel 3.19 is not a fix, it is a
downgrade of a whole OS!
Fgrlx makes trouble for years now. Even AMD stated that the catalyst
suite is only working til 3.19 Kernel Version.
