My laptop (ubuntu studio 64bit) just suddenly decided to have this
problem.
The network menu shows "NetworkManager is not running", if i try to run
NetworkManager directly, it shows this error and exits.

gentoo, requiring the while QT+KDE stack to be built with gles2).
A very similar freeze occurs with enlightenment/wayland, so I assume

the link to download the driver is wrong : epsom instead of epson.

The problem still occurs when using a kernel from vivid (3.19.0-35).
If I login, the resolution is not correct. If I fix the resolution
everything is fine until I logout (no need to reboot). If I login again,
the resolution is bad again.
The available resolutions seem to change from time to time
Correction for comment #3: Needed cups-browsed version is 1.2.0 (which I
will release soon).

That's it, the "--channel=ubuntu-touch/devel-proposed/ubuntu" version
works perfectly, no filter crash any more!
Some updates:
I proceeded as in the initial posting, but did
ubuntu-device-flash touch --channel=ubuntu-touch/devel-proposed/ubuntu
instead of
ubuntu-device-flash touch --channel=de
