I ran hdajacksensetest and amixer -c0 contents after a fresh boot (when
my headphones were not detected) and ran them again after unplugging and
plugging my headphones back in.
hdajacksensetest gave the same result for both tests:

For what it's worth, Debian still runs an 3.02 kernel, and the performance
is decidedly worse. Better to work through the bug, Ubuntu is more up to date.

i have to thanks you for the tips: i finally change the ac97 bios
setting for 'HD Audio' and the next boot have well identified the Output
Devices, and the sound works without nneding to tweak the settings.
So i'm closing that report now.

Interesting, since the packaging has not changed for ages and we haven't
received any similar complaints from Intel-based users. The ARM
packages do not get regular upgrade testing, though, so it's possible
this bug has been present for years.

I can confirm that this is still an issue for me on both my home and
work computers, which have the same soundcard (Asus Xonar DS).
It would be great to have a fix.

(EXPERIMENTAL) support since version 5.2.9
Please try if the newer gutenprint 5.2.9+ included in vivid, 14.10 or 14.04 LTS
solves your problem.
You can test without installing by using an ubuntu-desktop live-cd.
