I've noticed this as a long-standing problem since earlier emacs
version. I hadn't identified it as related to particularly large files,
but now that you mention it, the problem seems to always occur when
running rmail or (now) gnus. I tend to have quite large mail files.

I have a multipage document with 2 columns and whenever I select text
that goes from one column to the other it seems to just stay hanging and
turns gray and cpu maxes out. I am not very patient so I force close

filesystems through udisks2.

I did some preliminary examination of the nautilus source code from the
Trusty repo. There is a helper object which is used to change the
desktop background, in libnautilus-private/nautilus-desktop-backround.c
(this file was actually removed in upstream:
