I found a way to disable the nouveau driver. Go to /etc/modprobe.d
directory and open blacklist.conf in a text editor. Type:
#nouveau
blacklist nouveau
This will stop thd kernel from loading the module. You will not get the
resolution ability but is stops the flickering.

As far as compiz not restarting, that is to be expected as an
unrecovered GPU hang will make OpenGL very upset and in turn make
compiz/unity3d unusable.

I was experiencing freeze since the last gnome-session upgrade: 3.6.2-0ubuntu3
I realise it was because I had removed update-notifier (since I'm doing my
update/upgrade from the command line)
Maybe we could add update-notifier as a gnome-session dependency.

Before you reboot, kill X (sudo service lightdm stop) then regrab the
i915_error_state. Identifying the GPU hang here would help root cause
the issue. (Though we need to be sure that the system can recover by
itself as well.)
