Low graphics mode in H
I have a 'fix' for the bug which may work, but doesn't fix the
underlying cause. If the proprietary drivers can be installed, or
simply a different video driver, this may read the gamma and allow for
re-sizing the display. I found a Live DVD (Linux Mint 14 Cinnamon)
which caused the same problem

have you tried this, after the upgrade that broke it; it would be
interesting to know if the problem was only effecting Brother printers
or was something more general.

This is a bit tricky. udisks, and system D-BUS services in general, have
no idea about user sessions. This could be done in gnome-session on
shutdown, or perhaps more robustly in lightdm when it sees the user
