I'm having the same issue in 12.10. I just noticed it two days ago.
I did quite a bit of updating from software center
Updated some Tweaks stuff and other programs.
Even added Htop hoping to catch something but all I caught was more freezes.
Today ..it happened about 5 - 7 times. I've worked about
3.6.0.3 under 5 seconds of each other normally, but even if it is hours
the first message never appears in the gnome message bar, however if i
open the thread in empathy the message is there

NOTE: This only affects the nvidia-graphics-drivers package in the
Ubuntu-X team's X Updates ppa (ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates). As such I
understand that Ubuntu does not formally support this package, but I was
informed to put up this bug report anyways.
Could you also please add the log files from '/var/log/dist-upgrade/' to
this bug report as separate attachments (not pasted into comments or tar
/zip-ed)? Thanks in advance.

I've been following this bug with some interest. A lot of good ideas
here, but there are some technical issues that haven't been addressed.
Until all the common unix utilities can be upgraded to be affiliate-
aware, common pipe operations might suffer from related amazon results.
