Every time I've tried 1 of 3 things happen. Either I get the spinning
loading thing in the chat window where my facebook contacts should be

Sorry, looks like I spoke too soon (post #4). The disconnections are
still occuring even though I have replaced the R8169 with the R8168

I have two layouts on this computer: Estonian and Russian. There is no English.
Here is how I reproduce this reliably:
1. Log in to fresh Unity session
2. Open LibreOffice Writer
3. Type random text in Estonian, which is the default layout
4. Press alt+sh
I believe I have found what was casuing the problem in my case. I have a
Realtek R8168 onboard ethernet, but Ubuntu was loading the Realtek R8169
driver.
lspci | grep -i eth output:
01:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
RTL8111/8168B PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet controller
