Could you clarify the use case you are talking about? The cases we
have designed for are:
1. Home users, who have a fixed number of users that are displayed in the
greeter
2. Network logins where the user list cannot be easily displayed (it is too
long or unable to be downloaded)

Chris Halse Rogers had a look into this and he came to the conclusion
that adding a VT_WAITACTIVE after the VT_ACTIVATE ioctl may help the
situation. It looks like there is a race condition somewhere between
LightDM, the kernel, ConsoleKit and X and adding the VT_WAITACTIVE
either solves this (or
middle-mouse button for resizing is not feasible for touchpad users and
keyboard-shortcuts do not necessarily make up for usability design
weaknesses. i still don't understand why unity (2d, not the 3d-resource-
hog) doesn't offer decent configuration/customization options...

I am not getting this bug to happen now, I have switched to my computer
which uses Intel 3000 graphics, where the one I reported the crash on is an
earlier I7 without the 3000 series graphics and with a AMD ATi 6700 series
gdm. I was having no end of crashes after recent update on that machine.
