I had the same problem until I turned off crossfading (Edit ->
Preferences, Playback tab, uncheck "Crossfade between tracks").
Crossfading never worked with MP3s, so no big loss.

Hmm, looks like the issue has resurfaced - only the error code is
different. This is an ipad 2 with ios 5.0.1. I am running Ubuntu 11.10.
