This may be related to apparmor. What are the contents of
/etc/apparmor.d/tunables/home.d/ubuntu? If it is all comments, can you
update it to have:
@{HOMEDIRS}+=/private/home/
Then perform:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor force-reload

Looking at the apparmor denials, you have non-standard paths and will need to
update the profile to allow access. You can add the following to
/etc/apparmor.d/local/usr.bin.evince:
/srv/system/usr/local/** r,
/local/stores/morse/** r,
Then perform:
$ sudo apparmor_parser -r /etc/apparmor.d/u
