I finally see my error! In the Language Support Hebrew was always grayed out. I
assumed that the fact that it was grayed out meant that I couldn't use it. In
fact I couldn't choose it, but I COULD drag it up to the top, and THAT I didn't
know.
So that solves the main problem in that
gnome-mag was demoted at the end of oneiric:

Ever since installing 11.10 I cannot login to my Yahoo account. I've
deleted and recreated the account several times, each time getting the
same problem. After trying for several seconds Empathy says "Connection
can't be established" with no further information.

Workaround: Run totem and minimize it. You're media keys will then work.
However, hopefully this will be fixed soon. I consider the priority much higher
than low. The media keys are the main reason behind performance to use this
client as opposed to the official one.
