When I try to launch any of the items in places (i.e. Desktop, Documents,
Videos etc.) I get an hourglass for a while and then nothing...
I can't start nautilus in any way.

I still have a running system with this issue.
It is not an ubuntu box but Arch 64. This is a fresh install.
I "stole" the disk layout from the ubuntu documentation for this system:
one btrfs partition with @ subvolume for / and @home subvolume for /home.
The system also uses a vfat ESP as it i

Nope, never. Closest thing I did was removing "quiet splash" from
/etc/default/grub. I added this again after I noticed the problem but it
doesn't solve it.
I compared versions of gdm, xsplash and plymouth with a clean lucid install,
they are the same.
So it must be some "old" artwork package it

I removed /var/lib/gdm/.gconf/, I now have an empty /var/lib/gdm/.gconf.
I get the proper login screen now. So this worked. Thanks.
One other thing, my terminal is black on white (while it is supposed to be
white on purple-ish) even though color preferences indicate "Use colors from
system theme
I tried this like crazy, been typing 2's all over the place. Can't seem to
reproduce it. Too bad, this is one of those "fun" bugs, although quite critical.
So it does not seem to be happening for everybody.
I tested this on lucid alpha2 and alpha3 64bit.

username correctly the first time, you can shut down the machine; only
if you enter a wrong password (before entering a correct password)

I agree that it is not very likely that this problem lies in nfs, but I also
don't think it lies in nautilus, thunar, dolphin etc. I am also experiencing
hangs in vlc, totem, terminal even the login screen (after I locked the
screen). Basically any application that requires (additional) disk acc
I have nfs soft mounted to /remote/nfsshare, I shut down the nfs server. Now
when I try to launch "Places-->Home Folder" nothing happens accept the cursor
is in hour glass mode for some time.

I just re-confirmed this bug for alpha 5. It is getting a bit more serious for
me now as I cannot install anymore using the live-cd due to this bug.
It is easily reproducible for me in vmware server 2.0.

Huh, I don't get it, why isn't this a bug? Log file viewer is throwing errors
about files it expects to be there while it shouldn't expect them (so it
shouldn't throw errors).
A clean install of Karmic does not throw these errors (even if the files are
not there), an upgraded install of Karmic (
