seems like this doesnt happen all the time
i rebooted my stem again and now it seems to work ...

running 10.4, pidgin 2.6.6 (audio method set to Auto)
whenever i watch a youtube video (in chrome) and pidgin generates a sound
during that movie i dont hear the pidgin sound until after i close the youtube
movie (or better, close the chrome tab the video was playing in)
once i close the youtube
ok, setting the Pidgin audio method to ALSA seems to fix the problem
i'll test some more and confirm (or not)

yep, setting Pidging audio method to ALSA is a reliable workaround for
this problem
could it be that the Auto methode defaults to OSS ?

today i installed a number of updates (via update manager) and the problem
started (only with CD in the drive)
