This problem appeared for me as well, using Empathy on Unity on a 64 bit
12.04 system, around the same time I installed "gnome-online-accounts"
and "gnome-contacts" (I installed gnome-shell to try out), but was only
sporadic. It could only be fixed by logging out of Ubuntu and back in.

I really wish I could give you the steps to reproduce it, but I never
figured out a pattern. What I can tell you about the bug is this:
- it didn't appear until I installed "gnome-contacts" and
"gnome-online-accounts"
- normally empathy would work fine, but everyonce in a while when I opened the
Testing 12.04, occured while attempting to use Nautilus to copy either
folders or files from a directory at "/home/hewie/Georgian/" to
"/home/hewie/Desktop/kat"
