Somehow the files /usr/share/gnome/help/totem/oc/figures/totem_next_button.png /usr/share/icons/gnome/scalable/mimetypes/spreadsheet.svg had both been turned into directory links, pointing at directories with the same name. The directory pointed at seemed to be inside the one doing the pointing.
