I would like to re-open this for INtrepid, it seems the problem
persists. Nothing I do will allow sound to play when a new email is
received. It worked on the beta, but after a clean install to the final
Intrepid, incoming mail sounds do not work for me.
Help?

It worked for me. I mapped the sound to a location in /usr/share/sounds, and
made sure it was a .wav file, and for the first time this is issuing sounds
for incoming mail!
