I can confirm this. I did basically the same thing and I also see no
way to set the boot flag.

I'm having this error on Edgy. "sudo chmod 644 $HOME/.dmrc" doesn't fix
it for me either...

After some more Googling, I found setting RelaxPermissions to 1 in
/etc/gdm/gdm.conf "fixes" it. I suspect it didn't fix anything but
merely gets gdm to stop complaining...
