I also encountered this problem, printing an email from evolution to a
networked printer running intrepid. On the cups server I get the following
error:

I have the same problem on up-to-date Karmic UNR and MSI Wind. For me
the flickering doesn't go away. I have I run gnome-power-manager on the
command line the flickering stops although it complains that the power
manager is already running. after a while of inactivity it starts to
flicker again and
ok, if i kill gnome-power-manger the brightness stays the same. ah well,
now i don't get notified when the battery runs out...

i figured out that if i kill gnome-power-manager and then restart it
with the --no-daemon option the flickering goes away and I get to keep
the power manager. very odd

I can confirm the patch above doesn't help. Backlight still flickers
after patch has been applied.
I noticed that when the backlight flickers there is no gnome-power-
manager icon in the panel. Restarting g-p-m a number of times until it
stops flickering also make the icon appear.
