For desperate Lucid users who stumble across this bug report: if you
need to change the settings for your passwordless account only once, you
can do so in ~/.dmrc. This file looks like this:

Using Ubuntu 9.10 I just added manually the new line from the patch to
/etc/pam.d/gdm:
auth sufficient pam_succeed_if.so user ingroup nopasswdlogin
And afterwards I created the usergroup:
sudo addgroup --system nopasswdlogin
Then the option in "Users and groups" wasn't greyed out anymore and

I had the same issue with 12.04 and nvidea drivers. I even downloaded
the Gnome Live image to report it as upstream bug. I think there was a
bug in gnome-screensaver. But now after installing 12.10 the bug
disappeared.

I tried to enable the icons (although I just wanted to get rid of the other
