Gedit doesn't show the recently opened files under File -> Open Recent.
In Open Recent it only shows Reopen Closed Tabs but that is also not
active (i.e not clickable).

I have the same problem.
My Ubuntu install is an upgrade from 7.04 to 7.10. (Currently on 7.10)
(The problem began shortly after installing Brightside, but persists
after disabling/uninstalling it. The two might not be related.)

Uninstalling Brightside does, in fact, get rid of the problem. The bug is
triggered by either an install of, or a running instance of Brightside.
I can now have as many rows as I need.
