while "/proc/acpi/button/lid/C1C4/state" is able to recognize the status of the
lid (open/closed), "power history" doesn't record it and standby doesn't kick
in.

I came here to say that it's working for me now.
I made a fresh install of karmic 9.10 and the suspend issue is finally gone: i
just have to close the lid, and it works flawlessly.
I had several issues on this machine on jaunty 9.04, i couldn't even *boot*
