Occurring still on a different OS (new install of Linux Mint 17 this
time) and over a year has passed since my previous post in April 2014:

At exactly the same time, my proftpd log reports a connection from a
wireless webcam that uploads images
Exactly the same as Ariel's post above, lots of errors appearing on
syslog:

I second ruffneckc's vote for the phedon post earlier.
This exactly described my problem, and was the solution that worked for
me, for example:
sudo mkfs -t vfat /dev/sdb1
Formatted the USB flash drive.
Then I was able to select the volume not marked with an exclamation

Further to my previous comment #16, I rebuilt my PC recently and opted
to stick with 10.04 LTS. It's incredibly annoying that I'm still getting
hit with this bug.
My Skype icon is permanently grey (even though I am onine) and if I
click to the left on the separator icon, it brings up my Pidgin IM
