Ubuntu developers simply blacklist compiz on 8.10 Intrepid and don't
start it on the affected processors. Same thing on 9.04 jaunty and 9.10
karmic. Compiz won't even start on the later ubuntu's for video drivers
that don't support compiz.
The CD's for various releases are easy to download
Karmic A5 CD on my i845 couldn't get by the first boot screen. Nothing
on the keyboard worked. The CD did boot and run on my two ati pc's so
the CD burn was O.K. A5 is the same as daily build 20090902.
Daily build CD 20090905 booted and died on the i845. I usually have to
put in "nomodeset" on

Yes, The menu is just fine, New Folder, New Document, etc...Change Desktop
Background.
"Change Desktop Background" results in a window with Settings Appearance,
however the background does not change even though a different background is
selected.
How do I get Systems Settings > Appearance
Another solution is to use Files > Pictures > jpg right click and set
wallpaper.
Do note as booted with vivid the wallpaper is hashed badly and I have to set
wallpaper every time.

Fixed for me here, I'm the originator of the bug report.
I still have another wallpaper bug #1404247 on every boot the wallpaper
is hashed horizontally. Files > Pictures > select a jpg > set as
wallpaper fixes the wallpaper until the next boot.

On one of my pc's I get a random login, on this IBM ThinkCentre with
Intel i845 I get a "black screen of death" where nothing works except
power off.
sudo edit /etc/default/grub
remove:

sudo update-grub
then reboot fixed it I think because it's been running for hours. See

Once compiz is removed on this IBM Thinkpad R31, Intrepid runs
comfortably well. I've had Ubuntu's on this machine starting with
Dapper. Without measurements, Intrepid seems to be more responsive than

New install of 20120411 build 3.2.0-23 was using "Home Folder" launcher. Acer
Aspire 1 netbook has been running Alpha 1 & 2, Beta 1 & 2 O.K. given usual
development bugs.
Unity-2D running as designed, except for this bug so far. I don't care for

"Files". Note that both pcmanfm and "Files" are using gedit to display
a file when in terminal a gedit temp is issued.

evaluations, just log on to one or the other. Last I checked that still
