I have the same sound card, same issue, but there's a "workaround" using
alsamixer:
-start alsamixer from terminal (is there an easy way to get a gui?)
-just unmute the IEC958 0 track using the "m" key
I have no idea how to have this set up automatically.

Using ubuntu Karmic, when you start alsamixer in a gnome-terminal, you can move
volume levels using the mousewheel.
Mousewhhel up takes the level up, Mousewheel down takes the volume down.

ok, found nothing revelant in /var/crash: no bug concerning gnome-panel.
I did run gdb, attach gnome-panel's pid, and created this gdb output. So
there's nothing more i can do.

Ok, thanks for help.
I installed gdb package related to libgtk, here is the new gdb output, which
seems more understandable. (see attached file)
To sum-up:

I actually used the second part:

on this exact same wiki page.
(as gnome-panel is set to restart, it's more handy to attach gnome-panel's pid
than running it from gdb)
