Right now I have abiword 2.4.2-0ubuntu2 installed and I still see the
same behvior. According to apt-get this is the latest and greatest.
And, the bug is still there.

I don't know what you did, but I just upgraded my system (AMD64) and
it works fine now. I'll compile and post a backtrace if it crashes
again.

Good point. It crashes immediately when I hit the open button on the
task bar. I never even get a chance to select the file.
Recently I tried playing around with Nautilus. If I use Nautilus to
open the file I can open
