Hallo,
thanks to your reproduction of the bug and some research i found a way
to fix the problem:
just uncheck the following option with gconf-editor:
/desktop/gnome/interface/enable_animations
The panel will disappear as normal, but you wont have the zoom animation
anymore ; /

Problem's solved after I installed pidgin-facebookchat plugins from here:
http://code.google.com/p/pidgin-facebookchat/
More likely that its version in the karmic's repo is outdated, the newest one
is version 1.62

I also noticed the fix after enabling the proposed. The gnome logo and
the proper 14.04 LTS shows, fixes this bug for me finally.
