I confirm this bug. This screensaver often freezes system. Compiz.real process eats all cpu and X become unresponsive. This issue is pretty old -- it was reproducible with old compiz or beryl. System is not dead after hang: it can be recovered by logging in via ssh/telnet and killing compiz.real

12000-15000 is not a solution, actually. I think, it should be set to max size, which may be handled by gThumb. It handles 16kx4k JPEG pretty well. So, 2^15 - 2^16 should be enough, if you don't want to set it to very large values. -- image resize dialog doesn't support image size larger than 1
