I have re-created it on another machine. It seems the steps neccessary
to reproduce this is simply to install the operating system. Neither
machine had a functional clipboard manager.

work unless both programs stay open. i.e., if I open a text editor and
copy the contents, then close the text editor and go to another program
(or the same text editor), the copied data will be gone. that's why you
need a clipboar

The mention of after upgrade may be confusing. I meant that once I had
upgraded to ubuntu 10.10 i had this problem.

Disabling the mtp plugin using the gconf editor solved this problem for
now, good thing i dont have a mtp based audio device i like to use as
well.
