I have the exact same problem (and yes, it's annoying ;)). Pretty sure
that it's connected with
GLib-GIO-Message: Using the 'memory' GSettings backend. Your settings
will not be saved or shared with other applications.
popping up when running evince from terminal. Hope that helps.

I can confirm the bug with Hardy final, "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" takes
pretty much exactly 30 seconds.
Sometimes, however (I am currently not able to reproduce the situation),
"/etc/init.d/gdm stop" takes less than 1 second.
