My Sony Vaio has a related problem, although the symptom is different.
Symptom: Battery state always reads 100%.
This is a fresh install of Xubuntu Gutsy Gibbon.

capacity state: ok
charging state: discharging
present rate: 10340
I suspect the battery applet problem is a symptom of the known acpi
kernel bug.
