I don't have the preview pane enabled but when I open a mail evolution crashes.
There seems something wrong with viewing the content of a mail message, either
in preview or when opening a mail.
This is since the upgrade to 13.04.

As a workaround I change the size of the panel. Standard I use 35
pixels. When I resize the panel pixel by pixel than the icons are
dynamically resized and suddenly they are placed correctly on the panel.
Right click on an empty space in the panel. Choose properties and click
on the size arrows.

I had the same problem. My solution :
I have disabled System -> Preferences -> Assistive technologies - Enable
assistive technologies..
