Upd: Empty space beetween icons appear after run applications without notification area icon support (browser, terminal, file manager, etc.). This happens also in AWN (avant window navigator) notification area, so, it`s not gnome-panel package bug, maybe. But in AWN notification area existing icons

Thank you, Jelle Foks. Your workaround works for me. In my case not only power manager icon dissapear (if I remember this propertly, now I use AWN notification applet instead gnome-panel), but after disable gnome- power notifications issue was gone. -- Icons randomly disappear from notification-a
