Out of curiosity, did you test if the original misbehaviour is still
there? The problem is very clear and, I think, not related to the
specific version of evolution.

No, the same happens even when the network is properly connected. From
the user point of view, this is just a plain old bug. Any workarounds?

I am testing natty. Please, this is urgent. Evolution does not work AT
ALL with gmail and imap. One gets random errors related to "unable to
fetch messages", and then non-standard headers are displayed, like if
the message parser would consider non-standard e-mail headers as a show-
stopper for fet
I don't have windows at all but I have a bug with the very same
symptoms: boxes instead of letters in evince. This came after a recent
upgrade to natty. I don't know where to look at, but I have some ms
fonts installed (I think this comes from some restricted-extras
package).

Finally, I don't have the above mentioned link in my home directory at
all, and unistalling the packages ttf-dejavu-core and ttf-dejavu-extra
does not help. Let me know if I should file a separate bug.
