The closest thing I've seen to a "real" fix was posted by someone in the
XFCE bug report forum http://bugzilla.xfce.org/attachment.cgi?id=2940.
Patching "exo-tree-view.c" in the Ubuntu "exo-0.3.106" (for Lucid)
source at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/exo seems to work without
ill effect as f

Could you elaborate please? I've just tried some dragging and dropping
experiments, but don't seem to be having any difficulties. Are there
very specific conditions where it causes a problem?

That's interesting. Looking at the exo-tree-view.c file, I gather the
impression that exo_noop_false would be required to prevent gtk from
deselecting rows other than the clicked one. However, in practice I am
not able to replicate this with the exo patched libexo-0.3.so.0.5.0
