Binary package hint: gdm
When running edgy testing, I've been getting odd behavior from GDM. The
system will seemingly boot fine, then when I should be seeing a ubuntu
branded GDM, i see the gnome flowers. When I try to log in after that, I
get a blank blue screen rather than
I filed this bug too without finding this one. The number is 66127 and
I'd like it to be merged.

I just realized that I attached the conf files from after a dpkg-
reconfigure. So here are the ones from a straight boot.

I really don't think this is actually a theme issue, i've got everything
installed that you mention. After I read the description of bug #62342 I
realized that was a better description of my problem.
