The clock applet is placed by default at the top right, next to the
sound, network, mail etc. indicators. These have no effect on hover
(except their tooltips). On hovering the mouse over the clock applet,

It seems to be triggered by the appearance of the password field itself: if you
choose to enter a username you can do that fine, but as soon as you hit return
to get to password entry gdm restarts.
