allow me to suggest that in my case (same error alarm had, namely
"evolution-alarm-notify crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()") I had not
even started evolution nor was I in the process at the time the error
alarm sounded of updating anything.
That, of course, made me curious as to how evolution cam
in
effect.

ok, I can confirm that my own ~/.config/menus/applications.menu existing
but being currently empty indeed leads to alacarte terminating.
