Well, I'm not particularly experienced, but I'd always suggest sending
patches upstream. I think this is a good improvement which would improve
the upstream version as well.
Make a bug there, submit the patch and link them to this thread.

How in the world could "Rock/Pop" be more useful in terms of

Please avoid Brown. We should really be phasing that out. I would stick
with natural colors, perhaps a combination of pale blue and green.

border is pretty ugly (again, not present on OSX), but necessary in GTK
