Binary package hint: gdm
I upgrade to Karmic today to help test and there is no gdmsetup binary
that I can find. There is also no corresponding option to select it from
the control center / menus.

I don't think this is unique to gnome. I have had this problem with
gnome in the past and, presently, with KDE.
It seems the desktop environments are missing something about informing
the x input layout about the layout change or maybe there's a bug in
xorg-server-input-keyboard.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but I wanted to voice my thoughts for
posterity. Right now the embedder's story is something like:
1) Look for js-config. If found, use it to find the sdkdir, then do feature
detection to figure out what JSAPI version it is.
2) Otherwise, look for libmozjs185
3) ...
