I had the same problem after upgrading from jaunty to karmic alpha 1 and
added a comment on bug 380234 for this. But I'm not sure if the issues
described there are exactly the same as the issue described here so I
won't mark it as a duplicate. Instead I marked bug 383434 as a duplicate
of this bug
@Michael: I got the same when trying that after I was logged in. Try it when
you're on the gdm screen and change into a tty (Ctrl+Alt+F1 for example) and
rund the sanity check there.
My guess for the exit code 0 is that the sanity check doesn't work anymore
after gconf is loaded on login.

failsave-x only supports use cases where gdm is not DISABLED. Setups where gdm
is used or isn't installed aren't affected. So...
although I understand that the patch described above works, I get the feeling
this is fixed at the wrong place.

My 2 cents:
The first upgrade gave me a new login screen and I stayed logged in like
everybody else.
Now for the second one... I don't think It killed the session but simply logged
out. At least aptitude that was running in yakuake didn't get killed until all
updates were processed and firefox

Sebastien: I will do that once you tell me how to get apport to trap the
crash. I have apport enabled all the time and usually it does it's work,
but here it doesn't seem to notice that nautilus crashed. That's why I
used gdb and ubuntu-bug.

Before Ubuntu upgrade to 9.10, the Rhythmbox side pane had the item "Unknown"
which I had to click to play inserted CD's. That's missing, so I can't play
