I just compiled Gimp 2.7.1 from source and I don't have this problem
there. I am guessing it is some dependency with the Ubuntu built that
is creating this problem? HAL perhaps?

When I remove AWN from the startup sequence in the session the problem
does not happen. Dont know why, See attached screenshot where AWN is not
started but the wireless icon is shown.

Hi,
I found out the problem, I had the notification applet activated in AWN
and that was having a problem. Once I removed it the problem vanished.
Sorry for the confusion. I am not sure if this is still a bug.
