I have the same problem in 6.06. Some applet icons are loaded then the
panels(top and bottom) both hang. Sometimes it takes many restarts to
get past the hangup

I have similar washed out videos under some circumstances with an "Intel
Corporation 82852/855GM Integrated Graphics Device" using the i810
