Search box does not persist long enough for user to type a filename

When in a folder with multiple files, you normally can select a file by
name by typing the name of the file. A small box appears below the
nautilus window containing the search text.
In the nautilus currently in 11.10b1, the search box disappears while I
am typing. It doesn't
@pdf - The actual bug in my book is that Nautilus still has a separate
window for file transfers. I think the file transfer should be converted
to a gnome-shell notification, which obviates the need for handling its
window. I don't know if the Nautilus devs intend to do that though, or
how Unity wo
Fixing that bug would be a solution for now, but ideally a real solution
wouldn't use the deprecated notification area at all, but integrate it
into the shell somehow.

I am experiencing what is probably the same problem, except that it
always shows as if it was muted, instead of at full volume.

I found this "bug" recently, and discussed it with someone in #gimp on
the GNOME IRC, who helpfully pointed out that this was due to the
toolbox and other dialogs being hinted by the window manager as Utility
windows. This is configurable in the Preferences, under the Window

Upstream pointed out the bug is Ubuntu-specific, and affects nautilus,
not gnome-shell. The offending code is in the
