Is this supposed to be fixed in karmic? Because I'm having the same
problem in karmic and fedora 12. Upstream says a fix is in "git master"
but I'm not sure if that means the latest stable version or not.

The new word completion plugin and the snippets plugin both use the
"tab" key to activate. If both are enabled, the word completion plugin
overrides the snippets plugin.

Currently, the highlighted color changes depending on whether the
filename string has focus or not. Being able to tell whether the text is
in focus or not probably depends a great deal on the gtk theme. This is
probably something for some usability folks to look at and further
