I'm also experiencing this in Intrepid Ibex. Only setting Visual effects
(system-preferences-appearance) to none gives a stable playback.
My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 9800XT.

I get this problem with only 1 user. The computer crashes at random - no
matter if I'm at the computer or not. My graphics card is an ATI 9800XT
(with the proprietary drivers enabled).

I got fed up last week and disabled the compiz-fusion window manager
and noticed a remarkable drop in the number of crashes. This isn't a
workaround - it's just amputating the problem.

While playing video, go to view-> fit window to movie and there are three
selections available, 1:2, 1:1 and 2:1.
The two forementioned ones work but the third, 2:1 doesn't do anything.
I've tried several times. The version is 2.20.0

I have the same problem, the game becomes unplayable after a while. Then I
tried the following, under settings, preferences, theme - I chose "plain"
and the performance-issue was solved. I know this is a work-around at best.
